Hey there, welcome in! Today, we’re talking about Heartwood Coffee Roasters in beautiful Hudson, Ohio. Located somewhat downtown and out of the way, this little shop could easily be missed as just another plaza store but, trust us, you’ll want to check this place out!
Walking through the front door, you are immediately greeted by two things: the aroma of coffee, and the tall ceilings. Decorated more like what we would call modern minimalist, the neutral tones and earth textures work together to help create a warm and welcoming environment. In short, the vibes are there. But, as we’ve come to find out on our Beanventure, looks can be deceiving; some shops have an excellent atmosphere with sub-par places to sit while others have the world’s best workspace paired with the worst decor. Fortunately, that’s not the case here. Heartwood Coffee Roasters is a cozy, intimate shop that would be perfect to take a date or catch up with friends. Their variety of seating inside, outside, and an upstairs (yes, upstairs) loft give the patron plenty of options to enjoy their beverage.
So, as with all shops we go to, we ordered our go-to drinks: a cortado and a cold brew with vanilla and oat milk. Simple, basic, yet in many ways the cornerstone of a good coffee shop. Do they pull the shot well? Do they add just the right amount of sweetener? How do they texture their milk? Does the cold-brew taste like it’s had enough time to pull, or is it just an iced coffee? Specific, yes, but that’s what you should expect when going to a shop. *Mug Alert* This place has mugs to use in house; always a win in our book.
Kali’s cold brew: It was great! It had the vanilla sweetness, without being too sweet. It was subtle. Nice. I definitely like more of a coffee taste, and I got exactly that. It was delightful and I’d like to get it again sometime.
Jason’s cortado: Solid in every aspect of the drink. The milk was textured well, there was a nice latte art (always a nice touch), and the shot was pulled exactly right. It had just the right amount of bitter-sourness for me and I was really happy with it.
Similar to other shops, Heartwood Coffee Roasters sells both beans and barista equipment in house. Unlike others, the beans they sell are their own. Always a plus when we can snag great coffee to take home with us; it helps make our Mug Moments all the better! As for the barista equipment, they offer an assortment of brands with the most obvious one being from Fellow. As mentioned before, another cool part about this place is the loft. Perfect to head up and study or sneak away with a date for a bit more privacy.
Next time you're in Hudson make sure you stop by, you won't be disappointed!
