Muggswigz (Akron)

Hey there, welcome in! We here at Beanventurers love the individual, unique coffee shops that just bring their own expression into the world. But there’s something that should be said about the coffee shop chains (like Crimson Cup and Nervous Dog) that do just that! Today, we’re talking about Muggswigz and, with a name like that, we expected cute mugs and a unique vibe; and it didn’t disappoint!

Walking in from the downtown Akron streets, we immediately saw that the green walls were decked out with local art and cafe string lights hanging from the ceiling. The overall layout was more open-concept with lots of natural light, so no nooks/crannies to get lost in, but plenty of seating options available for work or intimate conversation.

Speaking of conversation, we came in on an early Sunday morning, just after they opened. There was a steady trickle of patrons, but nothing to be too concerned about. There was nice, calming music in the background that helped create a chill vibe, and the morning sun coming in through the front windows helped us realize we needed to wake up (even more so than the coffee).

Speaking of coffee, Kali got their drip coffee with oat milk and pumpkin. This drink can only be described with two words: very yummy! Muggswigz has a way of flavoring the drink without a) making it too oversweet, and b) masking the coffee. Once again, Jason got his ole’ standby: the cortado. Though he’s typically had bad experiences with chains in the past, he was pleasantly surprised by this drink: the milk was textured beautifully and had a good milk-to-coffee ratio. The espresso tasted almost like a medium roast; not too bitter, but not too sweet. Somewhere in the middle. Was there a mug alert? Yes! Kali nearly cartwheeled to the register when she saw the cute and colorful mugs and mason jar water cups.

In addition to their large tea selection, Muggswigz also featured a display of yummy pastries and a breakfast sandwich that all seemed to be made daily. Since it was so early, we opted for the latter and found it flavorful and a great filling-breakfast.

Muggswigz definitely has its own personality, and nothing could be more evident of this than their sign out front. As far as we’re concerned, we have a new mantra: don’t be like Bob!
